Coffee with the girls

P pulled out an issue of Scientific American and we all leaned over to look at the article she was pointing out— something about Jewish brains being accurately measured. I can’t really remember, except that, since we are all Jewish, we found it very amusing. What I do remember was that I quickly lost interest in that particular story, in favor of the small sidebar underneath. Big Blue, the supercomputer created by IBM, was going to team up with a brain institute to begin to map the neurons in the human brain. Alongside the small announcement, the magazine published one of the preliminary pictures created by Big Blue. It was fantastic. Tiny little nerves, reaching out towards one another, all somehow connected in a pattern that resembled architectural arches spanning the space. It was one of those really great moments when one realizes exactly how they’re going to spend the next year of their life. For me, I would be painting neurons. I had just started painting again in earnest, having successfully ushered my third and last child into pre-kindergarten. My mornings were now spent in a large studio at the Art Student’s League, trying a few different subjects to paint, sketching models and experimenting with acrylics rather than oils. But now I had a focus. And though I knew I loved painting large, I also knew I needed to slow down and really think about what I was doing. No better way than to use a brush that, at most, had a dozen hairs to its name. I could still turn my Ipod way up!

Funny how you never know what any moment will bring … what unexpected element will be that light bulb, that moment of inspiration. The results of that funny little sidebar are so beautiful, thought provoking, and eye-opening! A whole new perspective … and isn’t that art at it’s best? So glad you’re sharing it with us!

The human body never ceases to amaze.

It’s like a fractal. A great sweeping landscape brought down to the size of cells.

I’ve never seen it before and I’m glad that you’ve brought it out.

I could look at these and 100s more like these for days.

Fantastic.

Amazing and beautiful. So much depth, they inspire so many thoughts. I see one thing, and then on closer inspection, so many more. I am so glad you are enjoying painting again. I remember when you used to paint pigs and hippos, now nerves and cells, imagine what’s next…

some people have it… some not. you never cease to amaze me with your talent. amazing.

“being an artist and illustrator myself, having trained in a conventional manner then learning to be unconventional, i don’t believe in pure talent. no matter how easy “it” may come to us, or how early one acquaints themselves with something they have passion for,.. we still have to fine-tune our skills or craft constantly or get used to disappointment” – robert schmidt 1990

I used to quote this to groups of creative people… now I will have to think of something new to say.

hello stern family. very nice Liz.
