Playgrounds

This afternoon, when I pick up the kids, I get to go to the playground. There was a time that I used to say, “Ugh, I spent the whole morning in the playground.” But it’s been a while since I’ve been, the kids getting older, busier. And today seems to be the first really nice day in a while. So, when my friends said they’re coming to New York for a visit, I arranged to meet them and their kids in the playground. Can’t wait. Meanwhile, I sit in my own little playground. Taking a break from one painting and starting a new one. I wanted to make something really small, and again on unprimed canvas (this year I’ve spent a lot of time on larger, primed canvases). So I pulled out an old sketch and I’m transferring/altering/communicating it to this small piece of fabric. It has a heart in it, and mountains and valleys, and little places where veins and pathways can tumble and hide. Tomorrow I’ll start to work in some paint and color and see how it bleeds, literally, into the canvas. Today, I’m putting on my sandals and going to the park.
